WHiskey & Soda

There is a simple yet overlooked cocktail called the whiskey & soda. This classic highball is often frowned upon by whiskey snobs. Ignore them and drink whiskey the way you want.

What is a highball?

The primary explanation is a spirit mixed with a higher amount of a non-alcoholic mixer. It is the most well known of the five core whiskey cocktails, but we don’t call them highballs anymore. Most say I’ll take a Seven and Seven, Scotch and soda, or whiskey and Coke.

Our whiskey & soda

The joy of the whiskey & soda cocktail is the proportions are adjustable to fit your tastes. Use less whiskey or more soda in a taller glass. The simplicity of the drink makes it great for summers on the course, lake, hikes, pool, etc… The cocktail is crisp and refreshing with a whiskey taste. There is an endless amount of whiskeys you can use, but here are a few we like.

  • Saint Liberty’s Bertie’s Bear Gulch Bourbon

  • Balcones Pot-Still Bourbon

  • Still Austin Bourbon

  • Kooper Family Rye

  • Devils River Rye

  • Yellow Rose Rye

These are some examples to get you started, but whatever you choose, you can’t go wrong.

Ingredients

  • 2.25 oz bourbon or rye

  • Club soda or sparkling water

  • Ice
