The Nellie

We are borrowing this week’s whiskey drink from our friends at Spirits United. The Nellie is their cocktail of the month. For a cocktail that tastes like strawberry lemonade, it is perfect for hot summer months.

Our Nellie whiskey drink

As we usually do, we made some minor adjustments to the recipe Spirits United shared. The most notable changes are more whiskey and less lemon juice.

Their recipe also calls for bourbon, but any type of whiskey can work with this drink. We use Lone Elm Wheat Whiskey made from 100% wheat. The smell reminds us of fruity pebbles. You can smell the grain and variety of fruits with a hint of sweetness. This profile pairs with citrus from the lemon and tartness from the strawberry.

Experiment with different whiskeys until you find the one you like best. We recommend Lone Elm or another whiskey with deep fruits and a touch of sweetness.

Ingredients
2.25 oz whiskey
.75 oz simple syrup
.5 oz lemon juice
1 strawberry

How to make the Nellie
Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake well to muddle the strawberry. Strain, you may want to double strain into a glass with ice. The strawberry garnish is optional.

Another great summer cocktail is the whiskey fizz. Or you can check out all of our Texas Whiskey drinks that you can make at home.
